All 33 Citycon shopping centres will participate in the worldwide climate campaign organised by the WWF, where people around the world turn off the lights for one hour on the same day. The theme of this year's campaign is “It's time to go beyond the hour”, as the WWF urges participants to pledge to continue climate-friendly action after Earth Hour. Earth Hour 2011 will take place on Saturday, 26 March at 8.30-9.30 p.m.

During Earth Hour, lighting in the Citycon shopping centres will be reduced by switching off advertising lights, among others. All Citycon shopping centres – 22 in Finland, 8 in Sweden and 3 in the Baltic countries – will participate in the campaign nationally. Each shopping centre will participate in its own way, ensuring that no danger is posed to the general public.

“First and foremost, Earth Hour is an expression of support. Turning off the lights symbolises our common concern about accelerating climate change. Citycon wants to lead the way and promote sustainable development in the shopping centre business. Globally, since real estate accounts for around 30-40 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions, the real estate industry plays a significant role in preventing and reducing emissions,” says Kirsi Borg, Vice President, Sustainability, at Citycon Oyj.

Citycon gives wide coverage to environmental responsibility in its sustainability report. The report includes data on its environmental performance, with key figures on energy and water consumption, waste recycling rates, and the carbon footprint of the company’s business operations. The 2010 report also gives the development of key figures during 2009 and 2010.
